Get Your Life Together 2019 ~ Simple Steps for Home Organization Success

Ready to get organized in 2019?  Here are a few sustainable ideas that will make life a little easier in 2019.

1. Identify your organizational goals and WRITE THEM DOWN.  When we write down our goals we are more likely to actually achieve them.
2.  What is your plan of action?  The chaos in our homes did not happen overnight.  We need a plan broken down in to actionable items to help us to achieve our goal to be more organized.
3. Start small for success.  Even if we just spend 5 minutes a day to organize and de-clutter we will feel better about the space we live in.

Examples of simple steps:
  • Make your bed
  • Put away laundry and shoes immediately
  • Don't keep things just because they are sentimental:  Take a picture and add to a scrapbook or online photo album
  • Donate on a regular basis:  Items like mugs, water bottles and clothing that are not used in the last 6 months should be the first things to donate.  Keep a basket handy and make regular trips to your favorite charity.
Tackling the daily routine:

Make school days easier with some of these ideas....
  • Calendar: Get a calendar and USE it.  Whether its a dry erase calendar, paper or a calendar app make sure everyone knows the schedule.  I love app based for notification purposes (let the phone remind people instead of me).  Popular app based calendars are Apple, Google, and Outlook.
  • Backpack Organization: Create a location where your students can unload their backpacks.  Hooks that are assigned to each child and bins to put emptied lunch bags, papers, etc can keep the space under control and reduce the hunt for the backpack the next morning.
  • Create a Homework Station:  Pick up extra supplies to get prepared for those evenings of homework.
  • Morning Checklist: Create a checklist so your kids can manage things like teeth brushing, etc.  Consider an after school one as well.
  • Prep Outfits Night Before: Save time in the morning by preparing the night before.
  • Color Code: Give each child their own color for their items and help them manage their lives

  • Lunches:  If you pack a lunch you can save time and energy by sorting out snacks ahead of time in to bins.  Pack as much as possible the night before.  Color code to give each child ownership over their lunch prep.  Use a guide (like above) to help make selection easier.
