Save While Getting Prepared Together: The Basics!

Everyone in America should have an emergency supply kit on hand.  Those of us in The Natural State know this too well.  As we are building and restocking our kit for this upcoming tornado season, so why not try to save some money too?
Since I am new to the area and new to the whole idea of tornado season in general, I will be building my family’s kit from scratch.  Although I have a great stock pile of deodorant and shampoo, I do not think that is going to be very helpful in a real emergency.  Over the next few weeks I will share with you the deals I find so that we can all stock our kit without breaking the bank!
The Arkansas Red Cross and Ready.gov (FEMA) have some great resources for putting together your own kit.  I will be using both of these sites in building my kit!
The Red Cross and FEMA both recommend that you should have a three-day supply of water (one gallon per person, per day) and ready to eat non-perishable food.  However, many families may want to have more supplies on hand than this.  You should really look at your location (rural, metropolitan) and any special needs your family has in determining the quantity you have on hand.  Since I have a family of four I will be basing my quantities on that.
Water
Food: Tuna, peanut butter, crackers, canned fruit, juice boxes, etc.
Other items:
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio
  • Flashlight and plenty of extra batteries
  • First aid kit and reference guide
  • Prescription and non-prescription items and specialty items for infants, disabled or elderly.
  • Bleach and supplies for sanitation
  • Extra keys for house and car
  • Extra set of glasses or contacts (none of us want to be like Burgess Meredith’s character Henry Bemis from the Twilight Zone with no spare glasses)
  • Small portable safe containing extra copies of important documents like birth certificates, insurance policies, social security cards and cash.
  • A change of clothes for everyone including long-sleeved shirts, long pants and sturdy footwear.
  • One blanket or sleeping bag per person.
  • Emergency  tools: Tools for turning off utilities, shovel
  • Camping supplies: Tent, tarps, camp stove, lantern
Pet Supplies: Three day supply of food and water for all of your pets as well.  Store dry chow in a water proof container or tote.

Stay tuned for my Week One experiences of Getting Prepared!
